Property tax appeals

Your property tax bill looks too high: the appeal deadline, where to file, evidence and a free letter.

What it is

Your property tax is figured from the value the assessor puts on your home. If that value is too high, compared with sales of similar homes or because the record has errors, you can appeal. Each state has a short window after the assessment notice, and a first-level board that hears appeals.

Who it helps

  • Homeowners whose assessment jumped
  • Owners whose property record is wrong (size, rooms, condition)
  • Owners taxed more than similar homes nearby
