Unclaimed money

Money you forgot about: old accounts, deposits, refunds and checks the state holds for you, free to claim.

What it is

When a bank, employer, utility or insurer can't reach you, it must hand the money to the state: old accounts, final paychecks, deposits, refunds, insurance payouts. Every state keeps a free official search, and the money waits until you claim it. Federal agencies hold some money too.

Who it helps

  • Anyone who moved, changed names or closed accounts
  • Heirs of a relative who died
  • Former employees and customers owed refunds
