Landlord retaliation in Alabama: what to do
Most states protect tenants who ask for repairs, complain to inspectors, or join tenant groups: the landlord can't evict, raise rent, cut services or harass you because of it. Some states presume retaliation if the action comes within a set time after your complaint; a few states have little or no protection. Federal law also bans retaliation for asserting fair housing rights.

Your plan for Alabama
Do now
Write a timeline: the date of your request or complaint, how you made it, and the date and form of the landlord's action.
Why: Timing is the core of a retaliation claim.
Collect proof: your complaint, inspection reports, notices, messages, rent history.
Why: Proof that you made the complaint and when.
If you answered “Eviction notice or case” to “What did the landlord do?”
If you got an eviction notice or court papers, follow the eviction plan and don't miss deadlines.
Why: Retaliation is usually raised as a defense in the eviction case.

This week
Read your state's retaliation rule on tenantrightsmap.com: what is protected, the presumption period, and penalties.
Why: Protection and remedies differ widely.
If you answered “More than 6 months later” to “How long after your complaint did it happen?”
Even past any presumption period, write down why you think the action was linked to your complaint (what was said, how the landlord treated you before).
Why: Without a presumption you need other evidence of the link.
If you answered “Within 6 months” to “How long after your complaint did it happen?”
Compare the date of the landlord's action with your state's presumption period, if it has one.
Why: Inside that period, some states make the landlord prove the action was not retaliation.
If you answered “Complained about discrimination or asked for a disability accommodation” to “What did you do before the landlord acted?”
If the retaliation is for a fair housing complaint or accommodation request, you can report it to HUD.
Why: The Fair Housing Act bans interference and retaliation (42 U.S.C. 3617); HUD's deadline is 1 year.
Keep paying rent on time.
Why: In some states the protection doesn't apply if you are behind on rent; your state page has the rule.
Nothing extra here for your answers.
If it's not resolved
Contact legal aid to raise retaliation as a defense or file a claim for damages and any penalty your state allows.
Why: Some states award a fixed penalty plus damages and fees.
Keep documenting any new actions.
Why: A pattern strengthens the claim.
