Your plan for Iowa

Do now

  1. If you feel unsafe (no locks, gas smell, threats), leave and call 911 if needed. Your safety comes before any refund.

Why: Platforms and hotels can handle the money later.

  2. Take photos and video with timestamps of the problem, and of the room's condition when you arrive and leave.

Why: This is your main evidence, especially against later damage charges.

  3. Report the problem in writing right away: through the platform's app or messages, or to the hotel front desk by email. Ask for a fix, a new room, or a refund.

Why: Platforms often require you to report problems within a short time after check-in.

  4. Tell the front desk or manager in person, then follow up by email so you have a record.

Why: A written record shows when you raised the problem.

This week

  1. If the hotel or host cancelled or you couldn't get in, ask the platform or hotel in writing for a full refund or a comparable place, and keep proof you were locked out or cancelled on.

Why: A stay that wasn't provided as agreed is the strongest case for a refund or a card dispute.

  2. If the place was unsafe, dirty or not as described, list each problem with a photo and compare it with the listing (save screenshots of the listing before it changes).

Why: The listing is what you were promised; screenshots prove the difference.

  3. Compare what you paid with the price you were shown. Under the FTC fee rule, a hotel or short-term rental must show the total price, including mandatory fees, clearly and more prominently than other pricing information. Taxes and other government charges may be shown separately, but must be disclosed before you pay.

Why: Fees you weren't shown can be raised with the business, your card issuer and the FTC.

  4. If they charge you for damage, ask for itemized proof (photos, invoices) and reply in writing with your own photos.

Why: Platforms usually ask both sides for evidence.

  5. If the business won't refund you, dispute the charge with your card issuer. Send it so it arrives within 60 days after the first statement showing the charge.

Why: Services not provided as agreed can be a billing error.

  6. Write a short demand to the business or platform with what happened, what you want and a deadline.

Why: A clear written demand often gets a response.

If it's not resolved

  1. File a complaint with your state attorney general's consumer office (in the state where the property is, or where you live).

Why: Offices can mediate and track repeat problems.

  2. Report hidden fees or deceptive listings to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Why: The FTC enforces the fee rule.

  3. If you are still owed money, consider small claims court where the property is or where you live, depending on your state's rules.

Why: Small claims is designed for people without lawyers.
